Tummy-tuck Surgery, also known as Abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure carried out by people having loose and sagging portions around their tummy. Abdominoplasty is carried out to remove the sagging portion and flatten the abdomen, providing the patient with a smoother and firmer abdominal wall. People going for a tummy-tuck surgery are majorly women, who have given birth to a child or opt for it due to aging, heredity or significant fluctuations in weight. At times people with normal body weight also develop protruding abdomen, for which tummy-tuck surgery proves out to be the optimal solution. The significant increase in number of people suffering from obesity and the desire to have a well-toned body has made abdominoplasty one of the most sought after procedures in the world.

There are different kinds of tummy-tuck procedures, depending upon the extent of the surgery, available for a patient. A mini tummy-tuck surgery is ideal for candidates who have been in a good body shape but despite all the diet and exercise, are unable to remove the protrusion below their naval area and hence are not being able to achieve the desired body shape. While a complete abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat around the abdomen area and requires the surgeon to move the belly button of the patient and attach a drainage tube under the skin for a couple of days. For people having loose skin and muscles in their back, extended tummy-tuck surgery is the desired solution.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the entire procedure takes about 4-5 hours. The patient is kept under medical observation for 2-3 days post-surgery to make sure if the patient is recovering properly after the procedure. The results of the surgery are permanent in nature but could be altered by significant fluctuation in the body weight. People planning to undergo significant weight loss and women considering pregnancies in the future are advised not to consider going for a tummy-tuck surgery. The patients are advised to follow a well-balanced diet, follow all the precautionary methods to induce the healing process, should stop smoking and avoid any drastic diet prior to the surgery.
