A Gastric Sleeve Surgery, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy, is a newer type of weight loss surgery which has become very popular in recent times for people seeking to reduce significant amount of weight. It is also called as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy as the procedure removes more than half of the stomach leaving a small vertical tube like stomach which would not allow more food to hold and hence people would not eat more. The surgery is popular among people who do want the associated complications and maintenance as required by other gastric surgical procedures. The Gastric Sleeve surgery is the first part of the procedure followed by a biliopancreatic diversion, which is not required in some of the cases.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery is performed both with the help of a laparoscopic technique and as an open surgery. Under the laparoscopic technique, 4-5 small incisions are made in the abdomen through which the surgical instruments are inserted. The instruments so inserted are then used to reduce the size of the stomach by stapling along its length, leaving a long tube like shape of the stomach. The procedure removes and discards majority of the stomach leaving a thin tube like structure, which restricts the amount of food consumption. A person would feel fuller early and for a longer period of time and hence the amount of calories to be absorbed would reduce.

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is a less complex for of weight loss surgery as it doesn’t rearrange the digestive system but removes the part of stomach making it less complicated and quicker than other procedures. The surgery doesn’t take long and the patient is discharged the very same day, based on their recovery and health. There are a few complications associated to the surgery just like other weight loss procedures which includes diarrhea, nausea, constipation etc. but since it is one of the least complex surgeries, the risk of any complication is least in a Sleeve Gastrectomy. The procedure is non-reversible and would restrict the food consumption of the patient providing a long term solution to the weight loss problem.
