Male breast reduction surgery, also known as Gynecomastia surgery is a surgical procedure to correct enlarged or over-developed breasts among men. Male breasts in men is a condition of enlarged breasts which can occur in any age and may result due to obesity, heredity, hormonal changes or due to the use of any drugs. Excess developments of glandular tissues, localized fat or excess breast skin are a few characteristics of gynecomastia and can cause huge amount of emotional dissatisfaction and can hinder the self confidence in a person. The surgery aims to reduce the enlarged breasts in men who are embarrassed by it and thus induce in them a new level of self-confidence.

The surgeon would thoroughly examine the patient and would discuss the expectations they have regarding the surgery. The male breast reduction surgery includes surgical removal of excess tissues, liposuction or combination of both surgical options. The surgeon makes incision around the areola to remove excess fat and tissues and depending upon the amount of fat the cut is extended to the chest and the areola is repositioned accordingly. With the modern minimally invasive gynecomastia surgery, that has gained popularity in the recent times, is carried out making a very small incision of about 5 mm around the edge of areola and with help of liposuction technique the glandular tissues are pulled through the incision.

The male breast reduction surgery is generally carried out under local anesthesia and the entire procedure takes about an hour or two but the patient is required to stay in the hospital for at least a day under observation. The patient is required to wear elastic garments for a few weeks following the surgery and is required to avoid any kind of strenuous physical exercise for at least a month after the surgery. Though the results of the gynecomastia surgery are permanent but a significant weight gain, hormonal changes or usage of certain medicine can hamper the effect of the surgery. The major risks associated with the surgery include lumps and scars which may be visible for a few months but gradually fade over passage of time.
