Breast Augmentation Surgery or Augmentation Mammoplasty, is a surgical process to increase the size of female breasts by placing silicone implants to increase fullness and projection of breasts, restores breast volume lost due to excess weight reduction or pregnancy. The breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among women that helps improving the figure and building self-confidence. Augmentation mammoplasty is a safe procedure which doesn’t hamper any other breast tissues, or hampers the breast feeding ability of a woman and doesn’t even interfere with mammography. Women get breast augmentation surgery to make their breasts bigger and fuller for cosmetic purposes or for reconstructive purposes, like after mastectomy for breast cancer.

The surgeon would do a thorough medical evaluation before the surgical procedure during which the patient is asked about their expectations and are told about all the implications associated with the surgery. There are two types of breast implants available: saline and silicone. Saline implants are saline shells containing salt water while silicone implants are silicone shells containing plastic gel. Since the breasts continue to develop till late teens, a woman should be at least 18 years of age in order to get saline filled implants and at least 22 years of age in case of a silicone filled implants. The surgeon would make several cuts under the breasts depending upon the type of implant and the amount of enlargement required. The surgeon would place the implants above or below the chest muscle of the patient and would close the cuts with sutures after placing the implants.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure takes an hour or two but the patients are advised to stay at the hospital for a day under observation. The patient is advised to stop taking certain medications prior to the surgery and have realistic expectations from the surgery. The patients are advised to take extra care and precaution for a few weeks post-surgery and should avoid heavy lifting. There might be swelling in the area where surgery is performed which will fade away with time.
